古代マオリの足跡をたどる

日本では、ラグビーのニュージーランド代表によるハカダンスと結びついて一気に知名度が上がったマオリ族。 The Economist (December 23rd 2023) の “Pacific pathfinders” は、太平洋島嶼部に広がっていった先祖の足跡をたどろうと、伝統的な船（vaka）を再建し、古代の航海術で、海のうねりと雲の流れ、鳥の飛行と夜空の天体だけを頼りに島から島へと渡る現代のマオリたちを取材した記事です。

Captain James Cook was the first European to call at Atiu, in 1777. Many, including this author, were taught at school that it was European explorers who opened up the Pacific. In reality the arrival of the Europeans came just when the last—and most impressive—settlement in human history was coming to an end: the peopling of the remote islands of the Pacific.

【大意】ジェームズ・クックは、アティウに寄港した最初のヨーロッパ人である。筆者も含め多くの人は、学校で、太平洋を開いたのはヨーロッパの探検家だと教えられてきた。しかし実際には、ヨーロッパ人の到来は、人類史上最後の、そして最も壮大な入植活動が終わりを告げようとしていた矢先のことだった。すなわち太平洋の離島への入植・定住である。

記事は、古代マオリによる離島への入植が、漁民の漂流という事故の結果ではなく、意図した航海で実現したものであることの証明に紙幅を割いていますが、その部分は端折りまして、マオリの創世神話の一部をご紹介します。実は、もう35年も前のことになりますが、生徒として通っていた翻訳学校の授業で訳したことがあり、強く惹かれたため、その後自分が大学で教える立場になってから、たびたび課題文として使ってきたのです。でもまずは、 The Economist のこの記事の中から創世神話にかかわるくだりを２か所引用します。

Foundation myths and oral legends throw some light [on the history of the settlement of Polynesia]. Self-replicating in their general form, the legends travelled with the voyagers. From island to island gods such as Maui, who fished new land out of the sea, were recruited and repurposed to cap the founding myths of new settlements.

【大意】（マオリ族の）創世神話と口承伝説から、（ポリネシア開拓の歴史が）ある程度垣間見える。神話・伝説のおおまかな部分は、自己複製しながら、航海者たちとともに島から島へと海を渡っていった。神話では、海中から陸地を釣り上げたマウイのような神々が登場し、新たな任務を帯びて、移住地の創造神話を締めくくってきた。

“Maui, who fished new land out of the sea” とだけ書いてありますが、この land とは New Zealand （マオリ語で Aotearoa）の北島なのです。創世神話によりますと、この世が創られて間もないころ、まだ マウイ（Maui）が登場する前、 Aotearoa は神々による壮絶な戦いによる混乱の中で海中に沈んでしまったのです。 The Economist の記事は、伝説の航海士 Kupe に触れています。 Kupe は、マウイに釣り上げられて再び姿を現した Aotearoa を発見したとされる人物です。

New Zealand is said to have been discovered by Kupe, a legendary Polynesian navigator. But, in the story, it is his wife who declares, sensing land beneath it: “A cloud, a cloud, a white cloud—a long, white cloud!”

【大意】ニュージーランドを発見したのは、伝説のポリネシア人航海士 Kupeとされているが、伝説の中では、同船していた Kupe の妻が、その下に陸地があることを直感してこう叫んだ。「雲、雲、白い雲。長くて白い雲！」

長く白い雲。これをマオリ語で Aotearoa といいます。つまり、Kupe たちは、このとき長く白い雲の下で見つかった陸地を Aotearoa と名付け、それをイギリス人が New Zealand と呼んだということです。

さて、伝説の中でマウイが海中に沈んでいた Aotearoa を釣り上げたとき、マウイの兄弟たちはこれをねたみ、Aotearoa (the Fish of Maui 「マウイの魚」) を棒でつつきました。

ここからは文化人類学者 Sidney Moko Mead 博士の文章からの引用です。

Culture heroes, such as Maui, also perform deeds of tremendous moment. So, the Fish of Maui, the North Island of New Zealand, was fished up out of the sea. Then Maui’s brothers became greedy and began poking at the fish which he had caught. The fish writhed and so were formed the hills and valleys of the Fish of Maui (Te Ika a Maui).

【大意】マウイのようなカルチャーヒーローは極めて重要な業をやってのける。「マウイの魚」（ニュージーランドの北島）は海中から釣り上げられた。そのときマウイの兄弟たちに欲が出て、マウイが捕まえたその魚をつつき始めた。魚は身もだえし、「マウイの魚」に丘や渓谷が形成された。

マウイは他にどんな神業をやってのけたのか。太陽が東から西へと移動する速度を遅くしたのもマウイです。

One of his great feats was slowing down the daily passage of the sun from east to west.The sun, Tamanuitera (Big Son, the Sun), used to flee across the breast ofRangi, the Sky Father, before people had time to fish or do their gardening indaylight. So, one day Maui snared Tamanuitera and gave him such a beating thathe could no longer walk quickly. That is why each day the sun now takes itstime to travel to the west.

【大意】マウイは数々の偉業を成しとげたが、太陽の動きを遅らせたのも彼である。太陽タマ・ヌイ・テ・ラ（偉大な御子）はその昔、父なる大空ランギの胸元を素早く駆け抜けていた。あまりにも足が速かったので、人々は明るい日のもとで釣りや畑仕事をすることもままならなかった。そこである日、マウイがタマ・ヌイ・テ・ラをわなにかけ、脳天めがけて一撃を加えた。太陽は早足で歩けなくなった。こうして今では、時間をかけて西へと移動していくのである。

Maui failed in his last great deed on behalf of mankind when he tried to defeatdeath and secure never-ending light. After an epic struggle withhis relative Hine-nui-te-po (Great Maid of the Night), he was defeated and crushed to death. This struggle gave rise to the proverb: He mabi atu ta te tangata, ma Hine-nui-te-po e kukuti ma. (Man can do what he wants, butthe Great Maid of the Night will have the privilege of ending it all.)

マウイは最後に死（テ・ポ）を倒して人間に永遠の光（不死）をもたらそうとしたが、これを成し遂げることはできなかった。マウイは先祖の女神ヒネ・ヌイ・テ・ポ（偉大なる夜の女王）との壮絶な戦いに敗れ、圧死したのである。この戦いから、次の格言が生まれた。「人は欲することをなし得る。しかしそのすべてを終わらせることができるのは、偉大な夜の女王である」

It is our lot to live our appointed time and die. When we do, we enter the long nightand go into the loving arms of Hine-nui-te-po. Even today she is remembered as the ancestress who provides comfort for the dead of the Maori world. She is, in fact, the ultimate grandmother. Her realm is within the belly of the Earth Mother, Papatuanuku; thus burial in the ground is symbolic of a return to the spiritual and mythical roots of the Maori.

定められた歳月を生きて死ぬのが、われわれ人間の運命である。人は死ぬと、長い夜の中に入りヒネ・ヌイ・テ・ポの優しい腕に抱かれる。ヒネ・ヌイ・テ・ポは今日なお、死者に安らぎを与える先祖として記憶にとどめられている。実際、この女神は人類の最も遠い女系先祖であり、母なる大地パパ・ツ・ア・ヌクの子宮の中をその領域としている。したがって、土葬はマオリ族の精神的、神話的ルーツへの回帰の象徴なのだ。
