クレームとclaimとallege

日本語では「文句を言う」「苦情を入れる」ことを「クレームする」といいますが、代表的な和製英語のひとつです。英語のclaimも、そのような意味で使うことがまったくないわけではありません（「正式に苦情を提出する」の意味でfile a claimといいます）が、動詞claimの主要な意味は「（聞き手が納得するような証拠を示さずに、または示せないままに）主張する」「言い張る」です。「文句を言う」はcomplain、またはmake a complaintが一般的です。

claim

to say that something is true although it has not been proved and other people may not believe it:

He claims (that) he was not given a fair hearing.

Scientists are claiming a major breakthrough in the fight against cancer.

メディアが論争・紛争を報道するとき、中立の立場を守る必要から、当事者の言い分を、claimを使って伝えることがよくあります。任天堂が、観光客にマリオのコスチュームと公道を走るゴーカートをレンタルしている企業「マリオカート」を、著作権侵害で訴えました。

Nintendo claims the firm (=Mariocart) uses images of costume-clad customers for publicity without permission.

次は、アメリカの探検家バリー・クリフォードさんが、ハイチ沖の海底で、コロンブスが大西洋横断に使ったサンタマリア号を発見したと発表したときのニュースです。

Barry Clifford claims to have discovered the Santa Maria off the coast of Haiti.

allegeも、このclaimと似たような意味で使います。まずは辞書の説明から。

to state something as a fact but without giving proof:

The prosecution alleges (that) she was driving carelessly.

He is alleged to have mistreated the prisoners.

allegeもやはり、客観的に証明されていない事柄を「～であると主張する、訴える」ことです。ただ、claimとallegeにはちょっとした違いがあります。claimは、その主張する事柄が良いことであっても悪いことであっても使えます。良し悪しについてはニュートラルです。上掲のclaimの例文のうち、任天堂のclaimは、マリカート（Mariocart）社が悪いことをしたと言って非難しているのですが、探検家クリフォードさんがclaimする内容は悪事ではありません。一方、allegeのほうは、通常、悪事が行われたと「主張する」のです。上掲のOxford Advanced Learner's とLongmanの例文をご覧ください。NHK Worldのニュースからも引きましょう。

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, or FBI, has begun investigating the alleged attacks on Gmail accounts.

副詞のallegedlyもこれに準じます。

Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi allegedly invited young girls and prostitutes to a party at his home in February. (ベルルスコーニ伊首相は、今年２月、少女や売春婦を自宅に招いてパーティーを開いたとされています。)

今週お返しした英訳課題には、

「三笠フーズから汚染米を購入した多くの企業は、米の出所（でどころ）について何も知らなかったと主張しました」

という1文がありました。「何も知らなかった」というのは、自らの身の潔白の主張であって、悪事の供述ではございませんので、allegeではなくclaimを使います。

Many of the companies that bought rice from Mikasa claimed (NOT alleged）they had no knowledge regarding the background of the rice.
