「高給の仕事」

年明け最初の「今週のひと言」は、今週お返しした英訳課題から。

「（中年がリストラにあって）ひとたび職を失えば、それまで得てきた収入に近い給料を得られる職を新たに見つけるのは極めて困難でした」をどう英訳しましょうか。

Restructured out of a job, a middle-aged employee would find it extremely difficult to find a new job that paid as much as what he had been earning.

（「人をリストラする」はrestructure someone out of a jobといえます。）

としてもいいでしょう。

もう少し原文のニュアンス「それまで得てきた収入に近い給料」を出すには、

…  a new job that paid anywhere near what he had been earning

とすることもできます。

ところでこの「給料の高い仕事」は

a well-paid job とも

a well-paying job ともいえます。

おもしろいですね。過去分詞（paid）と現在分詞（paying）のどちらでもいいなんて。

この２つについて英語母語話者たちのサイト（WordReference.com）でどんな議論が見つかるか、ちょっと検索してみました。

You can use all of them. They are all fine and all in common usage. I would probably use the first one.

I think "well-paid" is more common in the UK, and "well-paying" is more typical in the US. In the US "well-paid" would be used more for the person than the job: "He was well-paid for the job."

まあどちらもOKだけれど、a well-paid jobはどちらかというとイギリス英語、a well-paying jobはどちらかというとアメリカ英語という感じですね。

アメリカでは人を主語にして、

He is well paid.

というけれど、jobを主語にするなら

The job is well paying,

ということが多いようです。

この「英米の違い」説は当たっているように思います。というのも、イギリスの辞書Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionaryでwell-paidを引くと、

earning or providing a lot of money:

well-paid managers | The job is very well paid.

とあり、人についても職についても使えることがわかります。しかしwell-payingは載っていません。やはりイギリス系のLongman Dictionary of Contemporary Englishも事情は同じです。（アメリカ系のMerriam-Websterには、well-payingもwell-payingも複合語としては載っていませんし、これらを使った例文も見つかりませんでした。）

動詞payは「なんらかの利（益）をもたらす」（to result in some advantage or profit for somebody）の意味でも使います。

Getting some qualifications now will pay dividends in the long term. (Longman)

ならば、a well-paying jobのほう理に適っているように思えるのですが、理屈どおりにいかないのが言語ですね。
