今週はTIMEから “Infinite Identities” (March 27, 2017) を読みました。
記事のテーマはLGBTQ (Qはqueer)動向です。

世の中には、自分のgender (文化的、社会的な性差)とsexuality（性的指向性）についていろいろと異なる感じ方をしている人がいるであろうことは想像に難くないのですが、その呼称（label）の多さに驚きました。TIMEの記事の中にも言及がありましたが、Facebookのgenderの選択肢は今年3月14日現在で71もあるとか。

asexual / female to male trans man / female to male transgender man / Female to male transsexual man / F2M / gender neutral / hermaphrodite / intersex man / intersex person  / intersex woman / male to female trans woman / male to female transgender woman / male to female transsexual woman / man / M2F / polygender ... などなど。

これらのほとんどに現時点で日本語の定訳がないことはいうまでもありません。

ただ、英語教室の主宰者としておもしろいなあと思うのは、LGBTQの人の中には、代名詞heやsheを使わず、代わりにtheyを使う人もいる、ということです。記事の中にRowel Littleさんというケンタッキー州の高校最上級生が登場しますが、この方は、

... who identifies as gender fluid and uses the pronoun they, rather than he or she

とあります。gender fluid（自覚するジェンダーが流動的）を自認し、代名詞にはheやsheではなくtheyを使う。こういう人と話していたら混乱しそうです。Who do you mean by "they"? 「theyってだれのこと？」という質問にもきっと慣れているでしょう。（gender fluidityという名詞はオンライン辞書の『英辞郎』にも載っています。「【ジェンダー流動性】ジェンダーは固定的なものではなく変動しやすいものという概念」だそうです。）やはり記事に登場するFordさんという方も

Ford, who goes by they and identifies as agender--meaning they feel they have no gender at all

とあります。

この記事のライターは、sheやheをなるべく使わずに書くために、ずいぶんと苦労されたと思います。ご本人の希望に従ってtheyを使うと、読者をまごつかせてしまうし･･････。

4月第3週のこのコーナ「無性の代名詞」でも触れましたが、everyoneやanyoneをtheyで受ける例は、近頃ごく普通になってきました。今週の記事ではsomeoneもtheyで受けています。

ほか、普通ならばsisterとかbrotherとかするであろう文脈で、無性のsiblingを使っています。

Her older sibling came out as transgender two years ago.

また、「～とみなす」の意味でのidentifyは他動詞として使うことが多いと思いますが、「～と自認する」という意味でidentifyを使うと代名詞が必要になってしまいます（例えばKatori identifies himself as ...）。だからだと思うのですが、記事の中で、この意味のidentifyはすべて自動詞です。

この点、そもそも人称代名詞を使う習慣のない日本語はなんと便利なことか、と改めて考えさせられました。
